What Are the Top Trends in Home Exteriors for 2022, And Which Garage Doors Complement Which Exterior?

After spending the last couple of years at home due to the pandemic, people have turned a critical eye toward the space where they've been spending the majority of their time, and as they view their space with fresh eyes, they are rethinking the way the space works for them as well as how it looks aesthetically.

"People are now prioritizing the way they feel within their space, so why not remodel to make it everything they need it to be?" – Sarah, owner of Real Architecture.

Many people have a favourite architectural style; do you?

When you are remodeling or even building a home, it's helpful to be aware of the latest trends in architecture and design features. Fads come and go, and the popular home exterior styles can change quickly. Four styles seem to be at the top of the home exterior stylebook currently. Let's look at what those are.

The Transitional Style

Flush design garage doors in Black beautifully accent this Transitional Style home design created by Anne Paquet Design.

"Rather than look for a specific design style, homeowners are steering toward an elegant style that will remain beautifully timeless." – Ashley, at Anne Paquet Design.

Transitional Style, also referred to in some circles as classic modern, is a timeless exterior style that many homeowners seem to find appealing. Transitional Style is a blend of modern and traditional elements.

The Transitional colour palette features warm, natural shades like brown, beige, warm white, and gray. In areas where wood is used, designers and home builders opt for a white oak to accent the warm shades of the colour palette. This design is known for simple, symmetrical lines.

The Modern Style

Notice this Modern Style home designed by Anne Paquet Design features California full-view garage doors. The garage doors feature a black frame that echoes the design of the window frame. The sandblasted glass panes give much-needed privacy while still allowing natural light to pass into the home.

Boxy houses are no longer trendy. Now, homeowners want mixed proportions, asymmetrical visual elements, and the illusion of an energized home. Using asymmetry of height and depth as a design element helps to avoid the feeling of a box while giving that energized feeling.

Modern Style homes are usually found in neutral tones of gray, white, and black. To warm up that neutral palette, designers and home builders lean toward warm blonde wood or stone accents. These design elements give the Modern Style a Scandinavian feel. Large windows let natural light through and add flair to the exterior.

Vog, Moderno multi, or Grooved designs give a modern flair to complement a Modern style home. If you want your garage to stand out, choose Iron Ore Walnut, Black, or Charcoal for your garage door colour palette. The Iron Ore Walnut is the look of rich walnut mixed with an intense gray, in case you were wondering.

The Farmhouse & Modern Farmhouse Styles

The Farmhouse and Modern Farmhouse styles are two styles that are still trending, and designers say people will continue to gravitate toward them for a while longer.

If you prefer modern design or a rustic look, the Modern Farmhouse Style is a good mix of the two. This style has been deemed the most popular in the year 2022. The Modern Farmhouse Style blends the classic farmhouse with sleek, subdued elements and a neutral colour palette of whites, grays, and black. You can clearly see elements of three styles here: Modern, Scandinavian, and Country.

Using raw materials like wood and stone together helps to bring style to your home. You'll find that there is a variety of exterior materials available. With soft, neutral colours, the textures of the raw material will add character to the house and break the monotony of the design.

Obviously, you don't have to run right out and redo all the colours on your home, particularly if you absolutely love your bold, bright colours. If you happen to be changing your exterior colours, the current wisdom says subtle is the way to go.
